It is a fast-growing, herbaceous shrub, which can grow up to 70 cm tall and has a dense bush. Foliage dark green and glossy, with purplish colour on the veins and underside of the leaves, margin toothed, leaf blade measuring up to 5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide . Purple or lavender in colour, spike-type of inflorescence, up to 15 cm long.

In order to induce branching and encourage compact growth habit, the plants require regular pinching by trimming the tips of new shoots. Remove the older flower heads as the inflorescence decline.
